Water Recycling
Almost all irrigation water, rainfall runoff on the property, and water used in self watering tables in the greenhouse are all captured and re-used over and over again. No fertilizer water runs into creeks and streams.

Weed Control

No granular herbicides are used for weed control. We control weeds with the use of coco discs atop of plant pots. When weeds do appear, they are eradicated the old-fashioned way, hand picking.

Disease & Insect Controls
Beneficial naturally-occurring bacteria, insect growth regulators, insecticidal soaps, baking powder, and horticultural oils are employed here at Dayton’s. We don’t “nuke” problems with dangerous chlorinated hydrocarbons & organophosphates.

Lower Energy Use
Greenhouse ventilation is passive; that is, energy hungry fans are eliminated. Recapture of water through gravity means less electricity to pump water and the gradual conversion of inefficient heaters to 83% and 93% efficiency burns less natural gas.

And, even though we began this sustainability project in 1999, we’re not finished yet!
