Truthfully, the best way to plant mums is in the spring and continually pinch them back until July 4th. Those are the best, hardiest type of mums. But, fall mums can also be overwintered. But, it is best to leave the foliage in tact and plant them in a sheltered area (not receiving too much wind) and mulch well for winter.
