The way to check if your dogwood is still viable is to scratch the bark slightly with your fingernail and check for green tissue. Also bend several of the branches to see if the wood has dried out. This should give you some indication as to the health of your tree. Dogwoods do demand excellent drainage and should be moved before the foliage leafs out in spring.
