Strawberry

Fragaria

Description:
Fragaria hybrids are a cross between a strawberry of unknown origin and marsh cinquefoil (Potentilla palustris). The resulting plants have the best features from both plants: a long bloom time beginning in midspring, fast-spreading groundcover capabilities, and even small, edible strawberries! Its trailing habit also makes this a nice accent plant in hanging baskets or windowboxes.

The leaves are evergreen but tend to look raggedy by spring, so you may want to mow over them with your lawnmower. They will fill in again very quickly, and this trimming has the added bonus of preventing disease. Plants may be divided at any time. Photo courtesy of Walters Gardens, Inc.
