How much Holly-tone or Plant-tone should I use?
Please see the Espoma website for application instructions. Remember to use only half of the recommended rate for new plantings. -
How often should I apply fertilizers?
This is a tough question to answer as some fertilizers need to be applied every week, every few months, or just once during the growing season. As a rule of thumb, plants can be fertilized starting about April 1st then as directed on the product package. We do not suggest fertilizing trees, shrubs, roses, vines or perennials during the months of August and September as the plant will not have time to harden off for the winter. See our Water & Fertilizer Schedule for more information. -
Are fertilizers safe for use around pets and children?
Most fertilizers, especially organic fertilizers are safe for use around pets and children. However, some pets can acquire skin allergies because of these products. If you notice your pets scratching or biting their skin after being outside after applying fertilizer, you may want to keep the pets off of those areas until the fertilizer gets into the soil, about 1-2 days. -
How do I know which fertilizer to use on which plant?
This can be tricky but most fertilizers these days will list what types of plants are best. Most general fertilizers such as Plant-tone, Miracle-Gro or Peters will work on almost any plant. However, acid-loving plants would prefer a fertilizer that will decrease the pH of the soil and increase the amount of acid. Holly-tone is perfect for plants such as Azaleas, Rhododendron, Dogwoods, Holly, Mountain Laurel, Blueberries and Pieris.
