It’s almost the new year and the beginning of winter but even now we are planting trees. Some of our trees are still outside and dug into a fine gravel where they will overwinter so that it’s irrelevant whether they overwinter in the gravel or more naturally dug into… With the first full day of winter, temperatures have been mild so far as we head into the depth of winter. At the nursery, our annual late fall weed killing has been finished to combat the invasive garlic mustard weed, sow thistles by the hundreds and the ever present… As the season starts to wind down, the nursery greenhouse work seems to never end. Repairs and maintenance go on to be sure that the equipment and infrastructure are ready to hold up to the mayhem of another not-to-distant spring. Inside the greenhouse, soon shipments… Tree sales of Fraser Fir have been brisk resulting in a shortage of our cut trees early in the season. We have supplemented our cut trees by freshly cutting some local Canaan Fir that are quite similar to Fraser fir as far as branching, color and needle retention….
